MISSION:
Roca is an innovative, nationally recognized organization
working with disengaged and disenfranchised youth in Chelsea, Revere, East Boston,
and Springfield Massachusetts. Utilizing a model of “transformational
relationships,” Currently, Roca intensively serves 795 young people. This
is expected to grow to approximately 1,800 young people by FY 2016. Roca
takes a unique approach to moving very high-risk young people out of violence
and poverty. Roca doesn’t wait for these young people to re-engage in society
on their own. Left to their own devices, most never will. Instead, we go out
and find them on the streets. We tell them the truth, teach them
to trust, and help them learn and practice the skills needed to transform their
lives and get on the path to achieving economic independence.
Roca has developed and operates an Intervention Model
designed to help the most high-risk young people break the destructive cycles
of poverty, violence and perpetual incarceration. The Intervention
Model pushes young people to identify, confront and overcome destructive
behaviors and learn the skills needed to re-engage and succeed in society,
education, and the economy. Roca’s Intervention Model is based
the combined principles of cognitive re-structuring, skills development,
motivational interviewing, and transitional employment. To the best
of our knowledge, Roca’s Intervention Model for very high-risk young people is
the only full-time, long-term, behavioral change intervention delivered on
the street, for this population, by a non-mandating authority.
Serving and supporting high-risk young people is at the core
of Roca, and every employee is fully committed to creating opportunities for
young in an effort to help them lead happy and healthy lives. Roca’s
organizational culture is described as extremely hard-working, collaborative,
and responsive.
