Job Description



The Senior Digital News Specialist is a member of a new online editorial team, whose primary responsibility is to work with public broadcasting stations to plan, shape and deliver compelling local online news offerings for their markets. This involves working directly with station leadership to provide strategic guidance on growing and engaging audiences through a digital news offering. The Senior Digital News Specialist also interacts directly with newsroom staff, delivering compelling digital news presentations, crafting online training materials, and providing ongoing editorial guidance.

The ideal candidate has a passion for local news, for disruptive technologies and unbounded curiosity for how news, technology, and people come together. This person often finds themselves pitching the online opportunity to their peers in the news business and helping them get involved. They enjoy collaborating with disparate actors including technologists, designers, editors, bloggers, and radio and television partners.  For this person, communicating and sharing lessons-learned is second nature and fun.  This person looks forward to discovering the unexpected and approaches life with patience, wisdom, and a quick pulse.  Exploring what local news in the public media space can become excites them.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Work strategically with Management and News Directors at selected stations to understand their needs, explain the digital news opportunity, and together create a plan for successful audience growth and engagement
  2. Monitor the progress of these selected stations and engage in an ongoing fashion to resolve issues, provide guidance, and pull in experts as needed in support of their digital news efforts
  3. In conjunction with other online editors and digital experts, develop and deliver training sessions and webinars for station newsroom staff on a variety of leading-edge digital news topics, such as developing an online content strategy, news blogging and social media best practices for engaging local audiences
  4. Monitor station progress in their digital news efforts and identify, document and present lessons learned and best practices from specific stations to the larger industry
  5. Create and manage an overall outreach and training plan for the Digital Services editorial team to deploy practical digital news knowledge, training sessions, and other interactions across dozens of station newsrooms

Required Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent; media or journalism degree preferred
  2. 6+ years work experience in journalism / media – some of which must be as an editor or reporter
  3. 3+ years relevant work experience in online journalism
