Specialized Life Skills Instructor

SUMMARY
Provide personal care, development, training and experiences in an enhanced ratio basis for individuals with Developmental Disabilities supported by EMARC at our Life Choices Metro North Program in Reading, MA. Ensuring opportunities toward self direction, community integration and meeting personal goals for individuals (as defined by Day Habilitation Support Plans and other support plans) as well as maintain and enhance skill development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITITES
1.Develop an expert skill set for adaptive equipment and individualized support tools based on the needs of the group members to maximize their independence and skill acquisition.
2.Provide personal care and assistance to individuals consistent with both their physical needs and defined support plans.
3.Adapt and make adjustments to techniques based on functional abilities and limitations.
4.Familiarity with the profiles and histories of individuals supported and active indications that care and assistance follows the prescribed needs.
5.Teach and model self care, self management, physical fitness, behavior management and other necessary life skills to cultivate supportive community relationships, resources and opportunities for participation in activities.
6.Promote social and community engagement.
7.Possess the ability to adapt current programming model to meet the individualized needs of the group members.
8.Ensure activities and trainings for individuals that enhance their ADL’s and specialized service needs areas with focus on continual improvement and/or maintenance of their abilities in coordination with all relevant support plans.
9.Follow a schedule of daily activities and develop curriculum to match the needs and ability levels of the individuals being served.
10.Developed curriculum will be shared with other colleagues.
11.Develop and implement community based activities that promote personal choice, community inclusion, dignity, and respect while enhancing personal skill development.
12.Complete all documentation in a timely manner required by EMARC and regulatory agencies.
13.Actively participate in interventions, providing positive, knowledgeable support to staff and Managers, ensuring crisis plans and behavior support plans are followed.
14.Attend specialized need area trainings in which information can be taught to other colleagues.
15.Complete all mandatory trainings to ensure skill maintenance and development, including CPR and First Aid, as well as other department and State agency required trainings and certifications.
16.Share expert knowledge with pertinent staff members to ensure natural supports are in place to increase inclusion with other participants within EMARC as well as within the community.
17.Actively communicate with family members, residential support staff and other points of contact identified by Manager to create and maintain a positive, constructive involvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Two years experience working with individuals with significant needs providing enhanced support in different need areas such as; communication, behavior modification and occupational therapy, Bachelor’s Degree preferred/can be substituted with 3 yr experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities w/ significant needs and High School Diploma or equivalent.
ADDITIONAL
Ability to communicate effectively with people.
Good analytical, organizational and management skills.
Valid Driver license w/ good driving record, reliable transportation, successful completion of Agency CORI screening process
